237. Words in charge taken in sense of law under which offence is punishable.
In every charge words used in describing an offence shall be deemed to have been used in the sense attached to them respectively by the law under which such offence is punishable.
Under Section 237 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, every word used in describing an offence in a formal charge is construed in the sense attached to it by the governing penal statute. Unlike foreign statutory provisions such as section 237 of the immigration and nationality act (INA 237 immigration nationality act deportation rules), Section 237 immigration nationality act queries do not apply to Indian criminal procedure; instead, Section 237 ensures exact statutory interpretation for criminal accusations.
